The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) was held in Dubai. United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 30 November - 12 December 2023, with representatives from 197 member states around the world participating. by different countries No agreement can be reached on whether to phase out the use of fossil fuels. Which are the main issues discussed in this meeting include:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Development of renewable energy
- Helping countries affected by climate change
The results of the meeting are as follows:
- Countries are recognizing the need for deep, rapid and sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. This is in line with the 1.5 degrees Celsius guideline.
- Calls for a tripling of global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
- Accelerate efforts to reduce the amount of electricity produced from coal.
- Call for the development of low-carbon and zero-carbon emissions technologies.
However, this COP28 meeting still had an issue that could not be clearly reached a conclusion on “the phase-out of fossil fuels”. Countries that support the phase-out of the use of fossil fuels include the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. It states thatthe use of fossil fuels is the main cause of climate change. which is having a severe impact on the world, such as global temperatures rising Sea level rise, droughts, floods and severe storms
On the other hand, oil and gas producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, Russia and Indonesia stated that phasing out the use of fossil fuels would have an impact on their economies and energy security. Especially developing countries
Thailand's position is to commit to implementing the national participation goals (NDC) within 2030 by improving the GHG reduction action plan to cover all economic sectors. It is expected that greenhouse gas emissions will peak by 2030 and the economic ecosystem must be adjusted to accommodate changes that take into account all sectors of the people.
In conclusion, COP28 is an important step forward in tackling climate change. However, there are still issues that need to be discussed. To achieve the goal of limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
From the 28th meeting and past meetings, it can be seen that many countries attach great importance and are very alert to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to be least affected by climate change.
