Key facts you need to know about ISO 14064-1!

Its full name is ISO 14064-1: Greenhouse gases – Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals, which provides organizational-level requirements and guidance for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and reductions.

ISO 14064-1 is part of the ISO 14064 series, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Its purpose is to provide guidance for measuring, calculating, and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) data at the organizational level, covering both emissions and removals of GHGs from an organization’s various activities.

The latest version, ISO 14064-1:2018, has been updated to better align with the current context, including aspects of sustainability management systems, data verification, and integration with responsible business operations.

What is ISO 14064 standard?

The ISO 14064 standards are a set of international guidelines for measuring, managing, and reporting an organization’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), these standards aim to help organizations in three main areas:

  • Quantification ccurately and transparently measuring their own greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Management And effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Reporting Reporting greenhouse gas emissions to the public or stakeholders, including partners, customers, and others.

ISO 14064-1 can be implemented alongside an organization’s carbon footprint (CFO). It can be applied for assessment and reporting, serving as a method to account for greenhouse gas emissions at the organizational level. This, in turn, provides a foundation for developing effective management strategies to reduce GHG emissions.

Examples of practical applications.

A consumer goods manufacturer in Thailand sought to reduce its environmental impact by implementing ISO 14064-1 to establish a system for measuring and reporting GHG emissions from various activities, such as factory energy use, product transportation, and waste management. The company then analyzed which activities were major emission sources and developed plans to reduce energy consumption, while reporting results to regulatory authorities and stakeholders. This demonstrates the company’s environmental and social responsibility and guides adjustments in operational processes to minimize environmental and social impacts.

Benefits of ISO 14064-1 for organizations

  • Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by identifying inefficient areas or departments, enabling improvements that increase efficiency and reduce internal costs.
  • Enhance competitive advantage by setting the organization’s direction for environmental and sustainability adaptation, aligning with industry and consumer trends that support suppliers and products contributing to greenhouse gas reduction.
  • Support the preparation of ESG or SDG reports.
  • Reduce future regulatory risks and ensure compliance with the law, especially when countries or regions implement carbon taxes or the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).)
  • Enhance the organization’s sustainability-aligned image, fostering transparency and credibility, with verifiable information accessible to partners and other stakeholders.

In summary,

ISO 14064-1 is not only a standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions but also a key tool for driving organizations toward sustainability. It enables systematic management of environmental risks while addressing the expectations of modern markets and consumers who value social and environmental responsibility. Organizations that adopt it early gain a competitive advantage in transitioning toward a more environmentally friendly future.
