Which is considered from 3 main parts, divided into:
SCOPE I: Calculation of direct carbon footprint (Direct Emissions) from the organization’s own activities, such as fuel combustion from machinery during operations or the use of company-owned vehicles.
SCOPE II: Calculation of indirect carbon footprint from energy use (Energy Indirect Emissions), which includes purchased energy consumed within the organization, such as electricity, heat, steam, and other forms of energy.
SCOPE III: Calculation of other indirect carbon footprint (Other Indirect Emissions), which includes employee commuting using non-company vehicles, business travel for seminars or training outside the workplace, and similar activities.
By understanding these three scopes, organizations can effectively identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as better manage environmental risks and responsibilities.
Benefits and “Opportunities” Organizations Gain from Carbon Footprint Assessment
At present, Thailand is still in a transition phase, encouraging organizations to begin adapting and voluntarily reducing greenhouse gas emissions. There is not yet a mandatory law on carbon footprint management, as the relevant legislation is still in draft form and will be enforced in the near future. Conducting an Organization’sCarbon Footprint for Organizationis not merely a requirement for environmental responsibility, but also opens up numerous opportunities for organizations in terms of business operations, image building, and sustainable development. Every organization should seize this opportunity to ensure long-term sustainability for their business.
1. Enhances organizational credibility and reputation among business partners, stakeholders, and consumers.
Demonstrating commitment to reducing the carbon footprint can enhance an organization’s credibility in the eyes of consumers, investors, and business partners. Organizations that are environmentally responsible are often perceived as modern and socially conscious, which helps create a competitive advantage in the market.
2. Identifies inefficiencies, focusing on cost reduction and improving operational efficiency.
Carbon footprint helps organizations identify areas of energy or resource inefficiency, such as electricity usage, waste management, or transportation. Reducing carbon emissions can significantly lower long-term costs.
3. Expands opportunities into new markets or sustainable products.
Markets that prioritize sustainability, such as green product markets and international carbon reduction initiatives, are growing rapidly. Having clear carbon footprint data enables an organization’s products and services to better meet the demands of these markets.
4. Facilitates access to funding sources and support programs from both public and private sectors, domestically and internationally.
Many investors and financial institutions place importance on businesses with sustainability practices. Conducting a carbon footprint assessment helps organizations gain recognition from ESG-focused investors (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and provides easier access to funding sources that support carbon reduction projects.
5. Preparing to Comply with Environmental Regulations
In many countries, measures and regulations on greenhouse gas reduction are becoming increasingly stringent. Conducting a carbon footprint assessment enables organizations to prepare for and adapt smoothly to these policies, reducing future compliance risks. In other words, starting early gives a competitive advantage.
6. Strengthening Collaboration with Business Partners and Stakeholders
Organizations that demonstrate environmental responsibility are often sought after by business partners with similar values. Transparency in carbon reduction helps build strong and sustainable business relationships.
7. Driving Innovation and Technology Development
Reducing the carbon footprint serves as a driving force for innovation within organizations, such as developing products that consume less energy, adopting green technologies, or improving production processes to be more efficient.
Conducting a carbon footprint assessment not only helps reduce environmental impactsbut also presents significant opportunities for organizations to gain business advantages, lower costs, and expand markets. Entering the path of sustainability is therefore not just an option, but an opportunity that businesses should not overlook.
